This was a great episode - plenty of really good information to help make a more informed decision about the best approach to compression. I've been using Levelator for quite some time and I'm generally pleased with it. It's certainly a "no-brainer" when it comes to running it - just drag the wav file over it and let it go.

Doing the same for listener v-mails that come in through Google Voice is very helpful also. Lately I've started running a little noise removal on them first with Audacity, exporting them to a wav file, and then through Levelator. They sound clearer when I then play the v-mails during the show.

This is definitely the funniest episode I've ever heard! And I'm sorry, Daniel, but not everything bad that happened happened to you- what about what YOU did to ME during your speech!? LOL. And really, Jeremy is right, you just added to my list of grievances against you in the telling of this story. ;-) At this point, you're never going to climb out of this hole...

Great show as always! In the beginning of our podcasting network we used Ubercaster to create our MP3's which utilizes the Lame encoder. The files were created in VBR until we eventually transitioned to Adobe Audition and began using CBR. We ran into the same situation with our iPhone app where older episodes would not work properly; however, in our case there wasn't a big impact since they were older shows. It is unfortunate these limitations exist across platforms since it takes away the control, design and decision making away from the content creator. I appreciate the plug for Waves of Tech but most importantly if anyone requires a "Subscribe and follow us here" widget, Daniels design is functional, eloquent and his work is above reproach.

And of course there is this:

MAJOR SPOLIER: In the climactic scene, an alien who seems to be a unified being in 3 distinct parts literally plucks our heroes from their destiny of perishing in a blazing fire.

oooooh-kay.

There were definitely some spiritual overtones in the movie, some blatant and some subtle, but I do think it was basically a movie about faith, as has been pointed out above.

MINOR SPOILER: Lotso represents what happens to too many Christians when we feel that God has let us down -- they turn bitter and even condescending to those who still have faith. I think we all know people who have an expectation that nothing bad will ever happen to us if we follow God, because He "has a wonderful plan for our life."

But bad things do happen, tragedy does strike. These "when the rubber meets the road" moments are when we need to cling more closely to our faith, and turn our back on Him. You know, the idea that "if God couldn't stop the hurricane (or keep me from losing my job, or give Mary cancer, or not let me have a baby), why should I worship Him?" Lotso takes his disappointment in God and turns it inward into anger, and becomes a militant atheist, asking the key question of the film: "Where is your God now?"

For a while I've been using iTunes to encode the mp3 files for the Airplane Geeks podcast, and I'm very happy with that. Previously I used LAME in Audacity.

My switch came about after I started thinking about bit rates when I noticed the podcasts I subscribed to were coming through at a variety of bit rates. I even sent Cliff a question on that which he discussed on a Podcast Answerman episode. His response left me with a few questions, so I did some research and ran across the LAME vs. Fraunhofer debate. (If you search for the two you'll see that there are very strong feelings on either side.)

One article demonstrated the difference between the two encoders at a variety of bitrates and showed that Fraunfofer had higher audio quality at lower bit rates, and there wasn't much difference at higher bit rates. That single study didn't silence the controversy, but since my (mostly speech) podcast is single channel mono at 64kps, I decided to try Fraunhofer. Besides, that's the guy who invented mp3 so I figured he ought to know how to encode the stuff!

Like you, at the Fraunfofer website I discovered you can't buy the encoder, but you can use it through iTunes as you described in TAP010. (I passed that on to Cliff, who was unaware at the time.) Anyway, the workflow using iTunes to encode the mp3 is simple enough and it works well for me.

Thanks for the great podcast, and congratulations on your marriage!

I really appreciate your enthusiasm! At this time, there are only nine episodes in The Audacity to Podcast. However, there are lots of podcasts about podcasting. I'm trying to build a complete list of podcasting podcasts.

I can't get it to actually play anything out through my speakers. I have the right device selected in the configuration tab.

The level indicator shows high volume being played.

Anything come to mind why I would be having this problem?

Yes, it can handle the recording itself, which can be handy for hearing your sound effects and recording with the same program. But I use it solely for a sound cart manager. I'm waiting for a bug to be fixed on some Mac software before I stop using PodProducer.

Hi, James! I highly suggest PodProducer to do exactly that. It's free, too! I actually still use it on my Mac via Crossover.

Daniel, what windows program should I use to queue up music for my show?

I need something that shows how much time is left on the file and so forth.

Thanks for doing this show. I REALLY enjoy it!

Actually, you would want to raise the noise floor. To get a better idea on how high to raise it, listed to TAP007 to learn how to switch to Waveform (dB) so you can see how loud your noise is. If it's much higher than -24, then I recommend running Audacity's Noise Removal tool, which I'll explain more in a future episode.
